If I know what Love is, it is because of you.
Wow – where do I start? I didn’t expect my Mother’s Day to be full of such emotion and gratitude! It is simply amazing how one little human can absolutely change your world.
Little Miss Aj was brought in to this world in December of 2019 so this was my first Mother’s Day with her here. This time last year I was pregnant & had no idea what life was going to be like with our little babe. To be completely honest – I was so sick & miserable that I couldn’t even imagine life with a baby at that point. I can tell you now that Aj brings so much joy in to our world.
I woke up early on Sunday to get some work done before the day started- because I assumed that I would be able to function normally like any other day. As soon as Aj woke up & I saw her smiling face in her crib I just became overwhelmed with emotion. I couldn’t believe that there was a whole day dedicated to Mother’s and I didn’t understand WHY until I actually become one. Being a Mom is exhausting, rewarding, frustrating and so astonishing.
Whenever someone told me ‘get your sleep while you can’ I didn’t understand that that advice came from a place of sympathy. Have you ever been so exhausted that you are emotionless? So tired that you just cry & you can’t sleep because you’re over tired? That’s been my life for the last 5 months but the truth is I wouldn’t trade those 5 months for an extra minute of sleep because what if I miss something?
I sat and looked at pictures of Aj, from when she was first born and we were in San Diego. I remember going for our first walk as a family and I was so exhausted, sore, my body was still recovering from giving birth. Oh my gosh she was so little. I regret not getting her foot prints when she was first born (we got the stamps at the hospital but we never actually did a craft or keepsake for ourselves).
I came across this really cute idea where a family had put their finger prints on a dandelion with the saying ‘We wished for you . . . ‘ so I decided to recreate it to fit our family. As many of you know, Miss Aj was a surprise so I couldn’t necessarily say that we ‘wished’ for her but I loved the idea that out of all of the ‘flowers’ we could have been gifted, we got her.
We did this craft right before bath time so we could just pop Aj into the tub after we did the prints!
I’ll link the supplies that we used below, but here’s how we did our project!
I found an imagine of a basic dandelion & printed that out on to some construction paper. I actually added some more stems/petals with a sharpie to make the dandelion bigger & fuller.
I picked colors that would coordinate with one another – Josh(Dad) was blue paint, I was the pink paint & Aj was the purple paint. If you mix blue & pink paint you get purple, which I thought was a cute little visualization. We did all of the prints at the same time which created the color variation – if you wanted more of a layered look you could wait for one print to dry before you did the next one.
- Have Dad (or the parent with the bigger hand) do their print first.
- Next, have the second parent do their hand print (or foot).
- Follow up by having your child(ren) do their print.
We put each colored paint on a paper plate & then lightly put our hand/foot in to the plate to transfer the paint. For Aj we just took a paper towel & covered the bottom of her hand/foot. We choose to have her prints off to the side a bit so they could be distinguished from ours.
I ordered 8×10 frames & once they come in I will hang them up in our hallway! I thought this was a nice way to make a craft a little more ‘classy.’
